Getting in the Mindset

Do you want a life where blogging brings in the dough for your family? Would you like to be able to set your own hours and work on your terms? Do you want to make a career from blogging? If you do, this next question is very important – how much do you want that life? In reality, you can make money out of anything, but how much work you put in determines how much you’ll earn.

I say this all the time – you’ve got to really want this life to make it work. Blogging isn’t easy. It’s hard work, and any career blogger will tell you the same. They spend countless hours planning out blog posts and collaborating with sponsors. Sleep happens when the work gets done. This is how you run a business. Already have a blog? Awesome. If you need some help getting started, check out this post on how to start.

Are you ready? If you are, the rewards will be wonderful.

Planning Your Strategy

You need a strategy, a plan that will take you from point A to point B. It does not have to be an elaborate takeover and conquer plan as long as it helps you see your goals and reach them. You’ll need to plan out these things:

  • What topics will you write about?
  • How many hours you plan to work?
  • How much are you going to invest into your career?
  • What is your marketing strategy to get your blog out there?
  • Where will you get your support?

I find having a blogging journal/planner very helpful, because it keeps your thoughts focused on the tasks at hand. If you’re more techy, a digital notebook can help keep your plans in check.

Choosing the Money-Making Topics

Some will tell you that you can blog about whatever you want, and I agree, if you’re just writing for fun. However, if you want to actually make money, you’re going to need to write about topics that are trending and in-demand. Why? Because that’s where the money is. People will be searching for trending topics, and the traffic will come.

Topics that are usually popular and trending:

  • How to make money blogging
  • Personal Finance
  • Beauty and Fashion
  • Lifestyle
  • Parenting
  • Food

Each topic makes money in different ways. There are advertisements, affiliate income and sponsorships, and depending on the type of blog you choose to run, your money flow will come in based on how you choose to monetize your blog.

Your Support Team is Essential

When I am surrounded by like-minded people, I am inspired. Their stories and their successes inspire me to do better with my own business. This is why I’m a part of the Billionaire Blog Club*. It is probably the best blogging group out there, and I know I rave about it all the time. Scrivs has created a team of bloggers who are mad-dedicated to make their blogs hugely successful.

We talk on Slack about anything and everything, and everyone is always willing to help with any question. There is no support team out there that is better – I’m telling you. Scrivs is always around – so much that he’s had to set regular hours to keep his schedule sane. I respect that. He’s a mentor of sorts, and I’ve learned so much. If you’re looking for some support, check us out. There are some awesome free courses too, so if you’re just browsing, check those out first. You’ll find them so helpful.

While there are so many blogging communities out there, I recommend you do your research. I learned the hard way (read here) that there are people out there just looking to make a buck. It sucks, but it’s real life.

How to Make a Career from Blogging

With any successful business, you have to put the work in. Blogging is not a get-rich-quick-scheme type of thing. Your effort and your passion shows in your writing, in your photos, and in your interactions with others.

If you have a regular job, try blogging on the side first and then transition over when you’re ready. Sometimes we have to hustle double time to make sure our foundations are strong. Blogging can change your life if you do it right, plan well, and hustle hard.
