I have been working on a little secret for a while, and today, I get to share it with you. But first, let me tell you my skin story.
For as long as I can remember, my face was a giant greaseball. It was ridiculous the amount of oil my face could product during the day. The pro – keeps the wrinkles at bay. The con – acne. So how I cleared up my skin… If you have oily, acne-prone skin, or maybe dry, dehydrated skin – everyone is different, but this may help.
Oily, Acne-Prone Skin
In my teens and college years, I tried to control the oiliness of my face. I tried many things, most of which probably aggravated my skin more, causing more oil and breakouts. I always had cystic pimples on my forehead and in between my eyebrows and on my chin. My cheeks were spared, thankfully. However, they are plastered with freckles, but that’s another story.
My pimples were large and painful most of the time. If I was lucky, I’d get the smaller ones that I would eventually pick and pop. I know, gross. But hey. I never went to a dermatologist to see what was going on, but as I paid more attention to what was going into my body and the activities I was participating in, it kind of made sense.

Hormones and a Stress-Filled Life
By the time I was 26, I was saying “I’ve had a pretty intense life. I could sure use a break.” It’s true though. One thing after another, starting in middle school, my life was a rollercoaster of everything. I’m not saying I’m not grateful for the challenges I faced. I am. I know I am better because of them. I’m just saying that my skin was reacting to my life and how I felt inside.
Also, I was on different types of birth control. Some would affect my skin and hormones horribly. Eventually, I asked my doctor for less to no hormones, because of my depression and anxiety. She was very accommodating and understanding. The switch really helped with the hormones. Now, I just had to get my life under control.

Diet and Exercise Habits
They say that you are what you eat. Well, I was eating a bunch of crap, so I felt and looked like crap. Working at a hospital changes you, at least, it changed me. I saw so many sick people, dying people, helpless people, and I knew that if I didn’t get my shit together, I wouldn’t have a very good chance later in life.
So I started working out. I joined a kickboxing gym for a couple of months and loved it. I continued to work out at home, because it was free. My diet consisted of healthier foods – avocados, eggs, yogurt, oatmeal. I cut out a ton of junk. I had already stopped drinking soda for years, but I do love ice cream and coffee frappes. After cutting those out, my waistline responded. I also felt so much better inside, not sluggish or lazy anymore.
Sleep was a different story. I worked the graveyard shift. My work night started at 8PM, and I’d get home around 5:30AM. I’d have to take a nap right away in order to get some sleep in before the kiddos woke up. Napping became a habit, and I would tally up a few hours of sleep each day, if I got lucky. I tried to catch up on weekends, which was nice. It was something I needed to work on, but wasn’t going to happen while working that shift.

Natural Skincare Experiments
I love a good DIY challenge, and since nothing I was using on my face helped, I decided to do some research and develop my own serum to target my skin concerns. In 2015, I experimented with different types of natural ingredients and methods, and I’ve even shared some of them on my blogs and social media. Sometimes the easiest solution is right in front of us!
When developing my serum, I read so many articles about the uses for various ingredients and what would work best. I came up with some recipes and tested them on myself, but I didn’t tell anyone. After a while, my best friend said to me, “hey, you’re skin looks much better.” Yes, we are THAT honest. I love it. I responded by telling her that I made this face oil to see if it would help. It definitely did. My spots were mostly gone, and my skin was glowing. Also, I went from having really oily skin to normal skin. No more grease face!

A few months ago, I was Facetiming with my cousin, and the first thing she said was, “your skin looks really good.” After that, I started to look in the mirror more, and you know what? My skin was looking really good. Pigmentation from previous spots were mostly gone. Skin texture was smoother, and not oily. The photos above were unedited and taken in June 2017, and I am not wearing any makeup on my face.
On my eyes, I’m wearing L’Oreal Lash Paradise Mascara, my brows are filled in with NYX Automatic Eyebrow Pencil in Charcoal, and on my lips I’m wearing Urban Decay Vice Liquid Lipstick in Firebird. I don’t wear face makeup anymore, unless I want that flawless look. Most days, I don’t care for it. I’ve never felt this way before, and it’s wonderful!
Super Secret Project Birthed from How I Cleared Up My Skin
I am going to open up my very own beauty and home shop. I’ve been toying with the idea for a while, and after talking it through with a few people, I decided that I’m going to go for it. My shop will launch some time in the autumn season, hopefully by September, and I would love to share this experience with you. I will be posting updates and DIYs and more leading up to the launch. Never will I test on animals. I test on myself, and I do have willing participants who can’t wait to try out my face oil to help clear up some pesky spots.
I find myself happiest when I am creating, and handcrafting items like face oils, perfume oils, candles, and more makes me really happy. Also, I use just a few ingredients to avoid overload, and ones we can all pronounce. I’ve got my business plan, recipes, and pricing strategies done. It’s coming to life one day at a time.
This is an incredibly exciting experience, and I look forward to the learning opportunities that are going to present themselves to me. Starting a business is hard. Keeping it afloat is even harder. Hopefully, I can accomplish my main goal, and that is to bring high quality, affordable, handcrafted beauty and home products. I can’t wait to share more! Get on the list for updates, exclusive discount codes and more!
What kind of products would you like to see me create? I already have my favorite face oil as the first product as well as some others. I would love some suggestions for more.
